1. Discuss high-fidelity GK simulations available and planned
2. Discuss nonlinear EP physics of burning plasmas
3. Discuss integrated frameworks and plans incdluding DEMO (HFPSeu, EP Stability WF)
Summary:
- From theoretical understanding (F. Zonca, M. Falessi et al) the complete zonal response (Phase Space Zonal Structure) needs to be accounted for in modelling the interplay MHD, energetic particles and turbulence. Global gyrokinetic simulations are mandatory. 2 types of codes are available in EU: ORB5, PIC, and GENE-global, eulerian.
- Diagnostics of the PSZS have been developed in ORB5 (Bottino et al) and in GENE (DiSiena et al)
- The impact of EP on turbulence has been reported to be stabilizing [e.g. Citrin PRL2013, slide 27 A. Mischenko] but also destabilizing [Slide 28 at higher beta]. So it appears that a mapping in beta and EP energy with both ORB5 and GENE-global with the PSZS diagnosed would be timely and allow to guide theoretical understanding, hence model reduction.
- The GENE-TANGO framework was presented: it allows evolving flux driven global simulation over longer times (1s?) but at the cost of stopping the non-linear simulations while potentially PSZS are still developing to use the non-linear heat and particle fluxes and evolve the profiles. On the other hand, global simulations, flux driven, with EP, with ORB5 or GENE-global can only cover a few ms of plasma and hence remain sensitive to the initial profiles. The fidelity chain from global gk codes, to GENE-TANGO and finally HFPS using reduced models for heat, part and fast part transport is essential is making sound progress towards reliable predictions.
Actions:
- Scan beta (and fraction of fast at a given beta?) as well as the EP energy, starting from existing ORB5 cases (slides 27-28 of A. Mischenko’s talk) with ORB5 and GENE-global. Switch on the PSZS diagnostics. Who: Thomas for ORB5 and Alessandro for GENE.
- Start integrated modelling iteration using ad-hoc stabilization in QuaLiKiz with ATEP on ITER Q=10 case: Philipp and Clarisse
Next meeting:
- Nov 20? At 1 pm? (I will be in Garching that week)
- Agenda:
§ PSZS diagnostics in ORB5 and GENE by Alberto and Alessandro
§ Update on progress scans ORB5 vs GENE by Thomas and Alessandro
§ Update on integrated modelling iterations by Philipp and Clarisse
