Passcode: 102383
General:
- Comprehensive update from recent General Assembly meeting regarding pilot plant development strategy and program direction.
- Pilot plant working group met prior to GA to discuss beam target VNS-type device (pilot A) versus larger scale device (pilot B).
- GA approved pursuing conceptual design to address pilot A shortcomings.
- Pilot A size variations now discussed from original 2.7 meters up to 3.1 meters to improve margins and current drive requirements.
- Commission took note without contesting, some GA members pushed for sites and financing concepts discussion.
- STAC presented TRL assessment at GA.
- Yevgen appointed as candidate for EU experiment team leader by GA, now officially Deputy Task Force Leader.
- Difficulty in generating suitable candidates for JT-60SA roles, GA members urged to provide better support for future positions.
- Over 300 applications received from Europe for experiment team membership.
- Application process needs improvement for next year, possibly via Indico webpage.
- Multiannual program plan update in progress with interactions with Mario Cavinato. All stakeholders need to be on same page by end of broader approach coordination meeting on Thursday.
- FP10 working group established by GA with members from five big labs, medium-sized lab representatives, small lab representatives, program manager, head of departments, and STAC chair. Working group to deliver report by December GA, which will take place in Brussels. 2027 to be used for detailed FP10 planning. Marco will provide link between work package perspectives and FP10 working group discussions. Initial focus on programmatic issues, governance difficult to discuss without knowing Commission boundary conditions.
- European strategy paper expected by July, formal boundary conditions hopefully clear by October GA.
- Next EFPW (Athens) will have FP10 as overall headline.
- Update on agreements with Japan, Korea, China, and concerns about data access.
- BEST commissioning coordinators call issued, meeting July 7-8 at ITER.
- ITER physics gap activities must be covered by annual work plan and existing funding. 6 July in-person meeting at ITER.
- Comprehensive review of outstanding actions from previous meetings with status updates.
- Review of pending deliverables across reporting periods and work packages.
WPTE:
- AUG close to restart with some timeline issues due to lack of flywheel generator.
- TCV up and running, WEST delayed start to 5 May, MAST close to completing campaign.
- Working group report presented at GA to be circulated.
WPSTEL:
- W7-X restarting with commissioning process on schedule.
- Call for proposals for W7-X finalized yesterday with about 300 proposals for two campaigns.
- Preparing call for participation from EUROfusion to be released beginning of June.
- Started writing PPCF paper on key physics gaps with coordinators. Plan to compile by September and submit in October.
WPTM:
- 17 April EUROfusion HPC project committee held remotely
- TSVV PI and team reported performance difficulties on Pitagora CPU and GPU partitions
- Technical session on SOLEDGE organized at IRFM on WEST transition from carbon to tungsten wall.
- International Advisory Committee in China for CFETR. Now very close to original European demo design in size and operational perspective but more advanced options at lower current are not excluded.
WPPWIE
- Two weeks experiments at VTT transferring diagnostic setup from JET to hot cell.
- Attempting to repeat experiments with calibration and validation using normalized samples. Preliminary results show total tritium in tiles very low. May prolong campaign or organize another calibration at different location.
- Container for transport needs recertification by manufacturer.
- Preparing for PSI conference, approximately 50% of conference in rehearsals. This indicates a strong European position in the field.
WPSA:
- W transition meeting minutes to be distributed to participants and interested project leaders.
- Multiple missions planned before end of July for TS and VUV spectrometer diagnostics work.
- PhD student assignments pending administrative process to be followed up.
AOB:
- ITER Implementing Agreement to be circulated. [Done]
