Academic Programme

General lectures

The first week of the school focuses on general lectures covering a wide range of topics from tokamak and sub-systems, basic notions of plasma physics, plasma scenarios to tokamak operation.

Visits

Several visits including the tokamak hall, auxiliary systems, diagnostics laboratories and the JT-60SA control room allow a unique in-depth comprehensive insight into the world's largest tokamak.

Topical lectures

Dedicated lectures are organised on 4 topics selected each year. In 2023 for the 1st edition of the JIFS school, the topics are:

  • Diagnostics
  • Scenarios
  • Tokamak Operations
  • Plasma-wall Interaction.

Practical exercises

The school programme includes 6 sessions of practical exercises, connected with the previous lectures, for which students will be divided into 5 groups of 4. The subjects of these practical exercises are:

  • Tokamak and sub-systems
  • Diagnostics
  • Scenarios
  • Tokamak Operations
  • Plasma-wall Interaction

and each of them will consist of 2 different modules. Each group of students will attend 2 modules belonging to two different subjects.

Students' presentations

On the last day, students will be asked to give a short 10 minute presentation each on results obtained in the exercise sessions.
