General:
- EU Fusion Strategy: The European Commission's grand fusion strategy, originally expected to be presented at SOFT, has been postponed. It is now anticipated to be released no earlier than the end of the 2026, likely early 2027. The decision rests with the Commission Presidency Office (van der Leyen's office), not DG ENER or DG RTD.
- FP10 Positioning Paper: The Bureau has tasked the FP10 group with drafting a short executive paper outlining EUROfusion's strengths and positioning for FP10. The deadline is end of October 2026.
- IO-EUROfusion Meeting Date: A new date in January needs to be identified for the IO-EUROfusion meeting, ahead of the EFPW scheduled for February 2–4. Work package leaders are asked to consider their availability. This meeting will focus on the D2 status and is scheduled to be done remotely.
- Budget Priorities
- Priority 1: ~3.1M EUR EC contribution.
- Priority 2: includes PWIE activities, machine time increase from 30% to 35%, and additional TE missions.
- Priority 3: remains without a defined budget figure
- The Bureau didn't provide any recommendation to the GA on DTT committed budget scenarios.
- GA October Meeting (7–8 October): The GA may decide on Priority 1 and 2 budgets and DTT budget release. A potential FSD meeting is being considered for October 13 or the afternoon of October 14 to discuss prioritization if needed.
- Grant Deliverables
- WPSA has three overdue deliverables; D10 is nearly complete with minor revisions pending, while D5 and D6 are further delayed by a few months.
- A WPPrIO deliverable is now extended to end of October; Eva is the responsible for it.
- WPSTEL deliverable - first draft done; awaiting comments before submission.
- WPTE flagged a potential delay for deliverable D18 due to key experiments depending on ASDEX Upgrade's campaign.
- WPSA confirmed TS commissioning milestone (SA.M.08) remains on track (pre-plasma calibration to be completed on time).
- ITPA Chair/Co-Chair Update:
- EU positions reduced from 5 to 4 (2 chairs, 2 co-chairs) for the 2026–2029 term.
- IO confirmed all 9 chair and 9 co-chair positions will be re-opened in 2029 with no automatism for current co-chairs to become chairs.
- EU nominees were not accepted; IO cited Europe's already-higher-than-equal share.
- IO expects EU to hold 4–5 positions going forward.
- Clemente and Fernanda will need to be explicitly nominated as chairs in the next round.
WPTE:
- TCV is running the campaign (mainly RTO7 experiments), slightly ahead of schedule.
- West is starting TE experiments next week; ASDEX Upgrade comes online in November–December.
- ITPEA joint meeting held in Korea; discussion ongoing about linking ITER's pedestal database with EUROfusion's gateway-based pedestal database.
WPPWIE
- Report on news from SOFT conference
- ITPEA joint sessions – core and edge addressed but there’s the need to link them with the pedestal.
- November Meeting Planning: higher-than-anticipated interest; speaker slots and schedule details are largely set.
WPSTEL:
- Minor cryo-system problem caused ~2 days of lost operation; not critical and not a component failure.
- Campaign participation is significantly higher than in previous years, including participants who came without having received travel funding.
- Working on a news item about the campaign start.
WPTM:
- Monitoring meeting held; PIs asked to provide project board material and FP10 priority ideas (expected by December).
- Code Coupling & Human resources/budget shortages: concerns raised by PIs regarding requests from IMEG. It’s being explored if existing coupling work can be leveraged.
WPSA:
- Pulse design simulator (PDS) gateway issues largely resolved over summer; but overall stability and license updating concerns remain.
- PDS In-person/remote training week planned for first or second week of December in Cadarache.
- WPSA adding resources to EPFL to support PDS training activities.
- Design review meeting for new OP3 diagnostic systems planned for first week of October.
- Experiment Team Meeting 4 (first week of October, ~20 participants) and Meeting 5 (late November, ~50 participants) planned as stress tests for remote participation infrastructure.
AOB
- Next Meeting: Scheduled in two weeks, starting at 11:00.
