      ETS-6 News 15m
      Speaker: Thomas Jonsson

      1. Merged branches

      • flux: Revised flux calculations; both interpretative and interpretative.
        • Correct units; some from W -> W/m^2
        • Fixes in eV/s -> W normalisation
        • Update interpretative particle fluxes outside core-edge boundary (internal boundary)
        • Update interpretative particle fluxes after the quasi-neutrality equation
        • Program using physics-quantities - rewrite code in terms of intuitive quantities that can be tested.
        • BUT there are still some issues. We do not always have energy and particle balance.

      2. New actors

      "penn"

      • Neural-nework based pedestal actor from Andreas Gillgren
      • Valid only for JET and AUG H-modes

      "solpsz1"

      • Edge-actor from ITER
      • Valid only for ITER and DEMO H-modes

      "source_analytical"

      • New actor from David Coster.
      • Use formula to create source terms, e.g. Gaussian sources.
      • Regression test added.

      "fusion_sources"

      • New actor from David Coster.
      • Calculate sources and sinks from thermal-thermal fusion reactions.
      • Regression test added.

      "runaway-indicator" and "runafluid"

      • Added to ETS-6 workflow.
      • hcd2core_profiles has been updated to handle runaway sources (the run-away current).

      "afsi"

      • Updated implementation in the workflow.
      • Tested; seems to give reasonable power sources, but particle sinks have the wrong sign.
      • Regression test added.
      • Both hcd2core_profiles and nbisim2 has been updated to be compatible with the special input produced by afsi.

      "FoPla"

      • ICRH+NBI Fokker-Planck code from Dirk, Ernesto and Philippe.
      • Previously in dedicated ETS-5 branch.
      • Now integrated in ETS-5 and also added in an test-version of the ETS-6.
      • Actor is not in the official actor release.
      • Still some work needed before an official release.

      "fusreac"

      • Fusion source code for non-thermal fusion products stored in distributions from either StixRedist or FoPla.
      • Added to actor release, but not yet in the ETS-5, nor ETS-6 workflows.
    • 10:15 10:25

Report from sprint "Verification on ITER Scenarios" and "Core-Edge" 25m
Speakers: Nathan Cummings (CCFE), Thomas Johnson (Fusion Plasma Physics (KTH/VR))

Sprint on Verification on ITER Scenarios (Nathan)

NC: We need to fix statement in the wiki on which NEMO (CPO or IDS) is most recent

      NC: Difference found in B-field.

AP: Distinguish ion and electron sources?
      TJ: No

JF: How long times were simulated?
      NC: 3s

JF: How often did you update the equilibrium?
DY: The equilibrium was updated during initialisation and then kept static.

JF: Was fast pressure included in the equilibrium calculations?
      TJ: Not in ETS-6.
DY: Not sure if there’s fast pressure on input.

      JF: Should we disable NEMO?
RC: “I’ve had lots of problems with NEMO in ETS-5 but Mireille refuses to maintain CPO version”
TJ: NEMO may still be useful in JET, where the beam look different.

JF: ETS-6 seems to be working!

TJ: Do you think an ETS-6 simulation with sources and transport coefficients from JINTRAC could be a good benchmark against JINTRAC?
JF: Good idea! We’ve done many similar studies in the past. Usually you find differences in conventions etc, and we may need to discuss with the JINTRAC team to understand these.

      Future sprints

TJ: We have an ETS-6 training at the end of November. Before this Pär is planning a sprint on ETS-5, and the ETS-6 training would be a continuation on the ETS-5 one. We need to announce both training asap.

TJ: What sprints do we need to prepare for the training?

      • TJ: We need a "Prepare for training" sprint the week before the training.
      • DC: We should have a training Core-Edge training next week.
      • TJ: I'll send an email to plan such a sprint.
      • DC: We need to prepare a good ITER case for SOLPSz1 for this training.

DC: We need to prepare a number of use-cases for training session:

      • DC: JET and AUG cases for PENN
      • DC: JET and/or AUG cases for CEC
      • DC: ITER case(s) for SOLPSz1
      • DC: Possibly we may have Theobaldis model for AUG.
      • DY: We should ask trainees to suggest use cases.

      FoPla

DY: I plan to release ETS-5 with FoPla later tonight.
JF: This is needed for the EWE sprint.
