General:
- SNE-related salary costs for long-term secondments have been approved by the GA.
- The budget shortfall is critical in the discussion taking place at the GA level on which elements from the reserve list could be funded. Presently even the JT-60SA budget is uncertain. The need of funding for JT-60SA seems undisputed and it will be furhter investigated also with the EC if speciic funds could be found in the future. More clarity regarding the materialization of the shortfall will be available after the Bureau in September.
- Julich depreciation item has been raised at the Project Board, Bureau, and GA. It was listed as Priority Zero [Top priority].
- Budget resolution for the reserve list is unlikely before the September Bureau meeting.
- The EFPW workshop will take place 2–4 February 2027 in Athens. The title will be "Milestones for a Fusion Power Plant". STAC proposed including presentations from private fusion companies (e.g., Proxima, Gauss, Renaissance).
- Marco shared slides from Gianfranco on pilot plant progress, noting that communication on this topic is not yet in optimal shape. The main current activity is assessing scenario performance. The operational window is constrained by the machine's aspect ratio, beam penetration assumptions (positive vs. negative beams), fast ion pressure, and density profile compatibility for exhaust. The target neutral wall load is 0.5 MW/m² in steady state. Exhaust remains a critical open item; Sven's poster shows a possible solution but results are not yet fully mature. High edge density required for exhaust is in competition with neutron performance in the core due to beam penetration constraints.
- Proposed high-level priorities for BEST were shared with work package leaders, largely aligned with JT-60SA priorities, with BEST framed as added value rather than essential.
WPTE:
- IO/EF meeting on 06.07: Brainstorming is ongoing on how to boost modelling particularly for QCE regime (SOLPS-ITER and JOREK). A consolidated view is expected before the summer break or in early autumn.
- The 2027 high-level timeline is being prepared. Key steps include a Review Meeting on 21-22 September, launch of the Call for Participation for 2027, and a GPM. Selection is targeted to be done before Christmas or in early January 2027.
- AUG has entered a premature summer break. Consequences for the Fall Campaign will be assessed by the TFLs in the coming weeks.
WPTM:
- The IMAG (Integrated Modeling Expert Group) meeting date has been officially announced. The meeting will take place 8–10 September at ITER. Xavier, Gloria, and the TSVV PI are expected to attend. A coordination meeting with the PI is scheduled for the following morning.
- Denis Kalupin confirmed that the databases have been released on the Gateway. Users should test access and report any problems to enable full implementation as soon as possible.
WPSTEL:
- The call for participation in the W7-X campaign received approximately 200 contribution requests from 13 institutions. Marcin is working to create a coherent participation plan. New contributions from DTT and broader participation from ENEA were noted as positive outcomes of outreach efforts made the previous year.
- The Topical Working Group Strategy 2035 for W7-X is nearing conclusion, with final presentations and recommendations expected by end of August. The strategy focuses on W7-X research priorities for the next 10 years, including code development needs. One identified need is advancing modeling of impurities with neoclassical codes in 3D fields — potentially relevant for tokamaks and worth emphasizing in FP10.
- A test plasma session is planned for the following week on W7-X, but a quench detection system issue may affect whether it proceeds. A decision is expected soon.
WPPWIE
- Some PSI conference paper submissions are still missing; outreach is ongoing. A suggestion was made to consider a global reminder mechanism for conference submissions.
- A follow-up meeting on the ITER Monday meeting results is planned, particularly regarding dust-related activities and potential funding proposals. Discussion needed on whether agreements will be direct with CEA or involve EUROfusion funding. JET dust activities are considered critical and need to be covered in the plan.
- A news item on ITER temporary first wall test results and related STAC decisions is pending; Sebastijan committed to completing it soon.
- Sebastijan Introduced Zahra as the new PSO for PWIE and Materials. Michael Reinhardt will provide support through end of 2026; Zahra will take full responsibility from 2027.
WPSA:
- Applications have been submitted within WPSA scope to the JT-60SA project call for ME1 and OP2, covering integrated commissioning, machine data analysis, diagnostics, and other technical tasks.
- Colleagues working on OP3 diagnostics have been invited to consider applying for NAC positions for the second half of next year.
- The 3rd ETW in July will include a post-design simulator demonstration, to be run locally rather than through the EUROfusion Gateway due to technical issues.
- A meeting was held on neutron-gamma systems following the TCM in Lausanne, involving colleagues fromF4E and QST. Topics included the compact emission spectrometer, gamma-ray spectrometer, runaway electron monitor, vertical neutron camera, plasma sources for neutron-gamma computations, electronics, and MCNP modeling.
AOB
- Simon McIntosh during the meeting at ITER was pushing for access to JET data from IO, reportedly to use AI tools. EUROfusion’s position is that JET data access should be provided on an individual work-plan basis.
- MW discussed with Richard K. to organize a meeting with Simon McIntosh in which IO should provide a case study from their access to MAST-U data prior to proceeding with JET data related work plans.
- A news item on Nicola's overview paper (TE) is pending
- Marco noted a push from F4E to make JT-60SA activities more visible and dynamic through news items; better syncing of JT-60SA news items was discussed at the BACM.
