ACH review:

After three years of providing computational expertise to EUROfusion code developers through the established Advanced Computing Hubs (ACHs) since 2021, it is sensible to evaluate the effectiveness of the work, the profile of expertise, and customer satisfaction with the current implementation. Consequently, the E-TASC scientific board (SB) plans to conduct a comprehensive review of five operational ACHs, presenting recommendations to the programme manager for activities covering up to the end of 2025 and the extension period of 2026-2027.

Dear members of the E-TASC SB,

 

I'm reaching out to discuss the tasks allocated to the ACHs in Category 1: HPC.

 

You may have had the opportunity to attend the recent webinar organized by ACH-MPG on the CINCOMP project. If not, I've attached a report by S. Mochalsky to this email, which provides a clear explanation of the software's capabilities aimed at optimizing the use of HPC resources.

 

Also attached is a sequential proposal by Roman Hatzky.

 

In simpler terms, the proposal suggests allocating some resources (~3PM/year) from each HPC-oriented hub to address issues that will be detected with the HPCMD tool. These resources would be on standby, used only if issues arise with the code overseen by the particular ACH.

 

To implement this proposal, no extra resources need to be added to the ACH program, as all Cat. 1 Hubs have some reserves. However, this may affect the tasks endorsed by the 12th E-TASC Scientific Board.

 

For this year, I propose a pragmatic approach:

 

• Allow ACH-CIEMAT, ACH-EPFL, and ACH-MPG to allocate up to 3PMs to resolve relevant issues raised with HPCMD.
• If the overall manpower balance of the hub doesn't allow for this allocation without delaying other work, inform the original task requester about the delay of the task until the beginning of 2025.

 

Next year these resources are to be foreseen in the ACH work programme from the begining.

 

In reality, the current tasks shouldn’t be significantly affected. ACH-EPFL will be reinforced with extra resources endorsed by the last GA, ACH-CIEMAT has some contingency that can be used, and the new HPC will be in active use by mid-year.

Dear Members of the E-TASC SB,

 

As you are aware, the allocation of ACH support to code development projects occurs annually, based on requests submitted by developers through the request form.

 

Recently, concerns were raised about the adequacy of the information collected through our existing form. In collaboration with ACH Coordinators, we have revised the form to better capture the necessary details for a comprehensive assessment. The updated version is attached to this email for your review.

 

Given that the entire process of ACH task allocation falls under the E-TASC SB, I kindly request your endorsement of the revised form.

 

To facilitate this, I invite you to share any comments or feedback by no later than Friday, 3^rd May. Once we've addressed all comments, the form will be considered finalized.
